Sa Pa, founded in 1922 by the French as a place of respite from the hot summer in the city is surrounded by the Hoang Lien Son Mountains, about 300 km northwest of Hanoi, near the Chinese border. In this area, jokingly, the "Tonkin Alps", is the highest mountain in Vietnam at 3,143 m Fan Si Pan, its summit, sometimes cloudy, sometimes snowy, towers over the 1,600 m high altitude Sapa. The mountains offer stunning views of lush green valleys and steep-scale rice terraces. Even fruit is grown, and in the spring bloom countless plant species.
