Beautiful colonial appartment in the very heart of old Habana. You will get a correct and realistic view of the real Habana at our place. Very well connected with all other parts of Habana and Cuba. Within 100 meters of Capitolio, Gran Teatro, Prado, Parque Central etc. This appartment is a great example of the elegant architecture of Habana. It has beautiful Spanish colonial architecture, which is reflected in the structure, the ceilings, the floors, the doors, the windows etc. An elevator brings you to our appartment, which is situated on the 5th floor, with views on Centro Habana. The views will surprise you in both the good and the bad sense; what's for sure is that you will discover what Habana is really about. In one of the rooms, Fidel Castro studied for his university degree in law.
We live in the very centre, the heart of folkloric, old Habana. As soon as you get out of the door, you'll get a perfect understanding of Habana: its colourfull, noisy and joyfull people, the beautiful but run down architectures, the chaos, the elegant but overcrowded hotels with swimming pools, the good but hidden restaurants, the famous concert halls and cocktail bars etc.
You can visit all the monuments and places to be by foot from the appartment, it's all nereby. We're within 100 meters walking of public transport to all parts of the city. You'll have plenty of choice between bici-taxi's, boteros (taxi's), busses, etc. The Malecon is only 200meter walking distance, so you can have a great jogging session along one of the most famous streets next to an ocean in the world.

We stayed the first night at the Hotel Nacional and really didn't like it at all. Then moved into Casa Arte and what a wonderful and truly welcoming place it is!!!! I am highly recommending it to everyone and I'd never want to stay anywhere but the Casa Arte when in Havana. It is simply the best.

If you want to see the real Havana this is the place to stay. The apartment is only a block from the Capitol building and is in Centro but only a block away from Old Havana. It is not a tourist street at all, thus it will appeal to real travellers. Watch life on the street out of your windows. Listen to the songs of the mobile food sellers announcing their wares and watch the buyers baskets go down on ropes from the windows above. The streets are where the locals hang out, sing, dance, argue and play. You will see it all. Although it looks gritty and very poor the area is safe. The locals will be interested in you too, we found they entered the building with us and took us up in the lift just to check us out. They were all interested in my children. The location is a good one for walking to the old city or down the Malecon. I looked at the faded splendid of the spacious airy apartment and imagined how it would have been in the past. Basic bathroom and kitchen, but this is Cuba.

We were so impressed with how friendly and informative all the info was---the people who greeted us couldn't have been more wonderful too.

Frederik communicated brilliantly with me in English. He is not in Cuba so it is easy for him to email. His parents in law clean the apartment and will give you a very warm welcome. They speak minimal English and we had a few misunderstandings and it pays to be very clear about things like washing otherwise you will find it is done for you unnecessarily. As such they cannot really act as guides unless you speak Spanish. We were met at the airport as requested. Our one breakfast was not what we were looking for so we went out for all meals. Cafe Archangel is local for breakfast then into the old city for lunch snacks and dinner. Have low expectations for the kitchen. They give you a mobile phone for contacting them with.
This is not the place to come if you are going to be anxious about power cables wrapped around the shower head, toilets that are tricky to flush, or cockroaches. However if you come here you will see the real Havana and meet real people.
