Despite the largest recession to hit the United States in the last 70 years, gentrification continues steadily throughout the neighborhood, if not accelerated by the affordable prices of living in Bedford Stuyvesant. The strong community and abundant brownstone townhouses in the neighborhood contribute to its growth and charm. Since 2008 a score of new cafes, restaurants, bakeries, boutiques, galleries and wine bars have sprung up in the areas with a concentrated growth found along the western and southern parts of the neighborhood. These areas include blocks north of the Nostrand Avenue and Fulton Street intersection and West of Fulton Street and Stuyvesant Avenues. These areas are serviced well by the express A train subway stops at Nostrand Avenue, Utica Avenue and a 5 minute walk to the C train with commute times 15 minutes to Lower Manhattan and 30 minutes to Midtown Manhattan. In 2011, Bedford Stuyvesant listed three Zagat rated restaurants for the first time, today there are over ten Zagat rated establishments

We have tried three times to reach our host by email and cell phone to ask him for ideas where we could store our luggage during the day because of our early arrival flight at 7am. He never answered or called back. During our stay we never met him. There waa only a friend of him waiting for us at the entrance who did not know anything. It was an bad smell at this house. The cupboard we were not able to use, too dirty. The neighborhood was not treating us nice. The connection to the C Train is very close. The bus stop was just in front of the house.

You get what you can expect for the price: the place is basically a small, rather run-down hostel, except you get your own room and there are only four or five rooms overall. Ask for a room in the back--those facing the street are quite noisy. Before you book, make sure you're ok with the neighborhood (Bed-Stuy).
