Obviously you can cook at home, maybe buying some local food nearby the Borgo Vecchio Market (1 min. far).
In Palermo is possible to eat every kind of traditional food at cheap price. Palermo is the capital of street food! Inside Borgo Vecchio market you can buy some fresh fruit or Sfincione (traditional Palermo pizza) or Panelle sandwich (fried chickpea flour). Near Piazza Marina at the hot table “nni zu Francu u Vastiddaru” you can try some Arancina (fried rice balls). You can order a dish of Pasta alla Norma (Pasta with aubergines) at “Club rosanero”. Or you can eat some grilled fish near Foro Italico promenade. Just ask, we know a lot of places where is possible to try cheap and home-made food.
Moreover, consider that exactly in front of your house there is “Cibus”, the most famours gourmet shop market and restaurant of Palermo for Sicilian food (you have all kinds of staff, from the cheapest one to the most expensive).
