The village was first mentioned in documents in 1295 as “Zelinische beke”, which means “Grünbach”. It belonged to the Putbus family for several centuries; until 1326 it belonged to the Principality of Rugen and later to the Duchy of Pomerania. After a further 550 years, Sellin developed into an up-and-coming seaside resort in which a warmbath and a spa park with fountain and a tennis court were built. The Sellin pier was restored in 1992 and officially inaugurated seven years later.
