The district of Galata slopes down towards the coast and its waterfront area of Karaköy. On top of the hill, stands the Galata Tower overlooking the glistening waters of the Golden Horn. Galata was one of the most cosmopolitan districts of Istanbul and still is today. Surrounded by walls but were pulled down to make way for the expanding population of Europeans who settled there. All its buildings have a European influence. Galata was once a finance centre with its own bankers and stock exchange and also a busy nightlife with many taverns. Its harbour was one of the busiest harbours of Europe. The Galata of today is still an exciting place to be with its narrow slopping streets full of cafes, restaurants and interesting little shops all leading down to Karaköy with its fish market and many fish restaurants.
A 5 minute walk from Galata will take you to the busy shopping area of Istiklal Street, full of modern designer shops and boutiques as well as Beyoğlu with its many restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs. On the way you will pass the Galata Mevlevihanesi (Dervish Lodge), which is now a museum where you can also watch the whirling dervishes perform on a Sunday afternoon. You will also walk through the Tünel Music Quarter with its many music shops selling traditional musical instruments.

At Şişhane is the metro station and nearby the Tünel street tram stop which takes you to the top
