When we arrived the apartment had not been vacated by the "host". We had emailed several times before leaving the UK and had spoken to him the night before the booked date. He had given no hint that there would be a problem. He tried to persuade us to take a friend's apartment along the road instead (which we did for one night because it was late evening by the time he came to meet us and we had nowhere else to stay) but it was not of the quality we had booked through the website so we have requested a refund. This experience has really influenced whether we will risk using this kind of service again.
