Our home-away-from-home is situated in a seriously beautiful part of Cape Town, South Africa. The rustic suburb of Noordhoek is nestled in a mountain valley, amongst lakes, vineyards and family farms, along the west coast of the Cape Peninsula. It is the perfect place to get away from the urban bustle, yet still be close enough to enable a hassle-free trip into the city centre (about 45min-1hr depending on traffic).
Being along the west coast means that the sea temperature is a little chilly (make sure to bring your wetsuit for surfing and beware of the sharks!) but also that you get to bask in the magnificent glow of the receding sun. In our opinion, the best places to watch the sunset are at the beach or along Chapman's Peak Drive.
Noordhoek Beach is a ten minute drive from our house. It is a peaceful beach with a long stretch of soft, white sand. It is the ideal beach to take the dogs, or the humans, for a walk!
The views from Chapman's Peak are world-renowned. Mountain hikes can also be done in this area. A drive through to the suburb of Hout Bay on the other end of Chapman's Peak Drive is well worth it. There are great places to explore there, like the market, harbour and fish and chip shops (Snoekies for the cheap, traditional fare). Pack some snacks and pull over to watch the sunset on the way back from your day out. Chapman's Peak Drive is a toll road and a small concession will be charged for using the road if travelling the whole way through.
We highly recommend the food market hosted by Cape Point Vineyards on Thursday evenings, especially during the warmer months. The views from this location are spectacular! They also prepare picnic baskets at certain times if booked in advance (check out the website for more details). It is a popular spot with the locals so get there early!
Here is a list of our other favourite places:
Noordhoek Farm Village (deli, restaurants, pub, live music, and arts and crafts)
Monkey Valley Resort ("tree-house" restaurant with a sea view)
Red Herring (casual restaurant with a roof-top bar and sea view)
Imhoff Farm (not only does this place have stunning views of the valley, but it's also fun for the kids - deli, restaurants, arts and crafts, paintballing, animals and camel rides)
One may be able to spot whales from some of the viewing spots described above.
Horse-riding is a sought-after activity in the Noordhoek area.
There are plenty of scenic drives around the Cape Peninsula (watch out for the baboons!). A drive to Cape Point Nature Reserve (where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet), will take you through the suburbs of Kommetjie and Scarborough.
In Kommetjie, you can find delicious thin-based pizzas and live music at Fisherman's Pub and Grill. There is also a decked boardwalk along the rocks to the lighthouse.
The Farmhouse in Scarborough is a quaint place to eat.
We have described only some of the activities you can do in the vicinity of our house. There is so much more to do throughout Cape Town and the southern Cape, but don't forget to relax! We hope you find this place as special as we do and that you come back for more!
Our house is situated in a security complex called Lake Michelle. As the name suggests, our house is built a stone's throw away from a lake. There are lovely interweaving paths around the lake (about 5km in circumference).
