It is a small local town actually with a vibrant but simple life. Kasteli is quite famous as a fisherman village so every day you can find fresh and cheap fish from our local seas. There are numerous unique taverns famous for their delicacies found at the port of Kasteli and the nearby area.
Kastelli or Kissamos is a small town of about 2,000 inhabitants, with an attractive little harbour, lots of shops, cafeteria and tavernas mostly along the seafront, a long history and a lively atmosphere. It is a busy place, offering everything tourists may need. In the west part of Kissamos is the main road, Heroon Polytechniou Street, full of shops and supermarkets. But in the summer (and all year round when the weather's good), the heart of town beats on the coast road, near Tzanakaki Square or Kastelli Square, which is mostly pedestrianised, letting visitors and residents alike enjoy a stroll by the sea. The Kissamos area is particularly fertile, rich in grapes, sultanas, wine and raki (tsikoudia). The town played an important part from early historical times onwards, as the provincial capital and economic centre of Kissamos Province in Chania Prefecture. The harbour of Kissamos is outside the town, linking Crete to the Peloponnese, Chania Prefecture to Kythera, Gythio and Kalamata. There are also daily boat trips to Gramvoussa and Balos Beach.
The wide bay of Kissamos is formed by two prominent peninsulas – Gramvousa Peninsula and Rodopou Peninsula. The town sits on a long pebbly/sandy beach on the spot of the old town of Kissamos.Travellers may arrive in here on the ferry from the mainland of Peloponnisos (travelling via the island of Kythera), or visit for a tour around exciting western Crete.
The five sandy coves at the beach of Falasarna and the spectacular Gramvousa Islet and white sand and turquoise Balos Lagoon, invite beach goers and lovers of nature. There are the inland gorges of Topolia and Sirikari to explore which we totally recommend. If you decide to explore the south west part of Crete, towards Elafonisi, follow the route of Topolia, you will not regret it!
