Make yourself at home with your German-Austrian hosts and cats in Staten Island! Your clean and safe private room is just in the right distance for a 60min commute to Manhattan and also to get some rest at home after a busy day.
The comfy King Size beds in our retro home offer the ideal home base for your New York City trip. Both airbnb guest rooms as well as the kitchenette and the bathroom, which is shared with maximum two other guests, are located on the upper floor of our house.
LIKES AND DISLIKES
Maybe the easiest way to help you make a decision is, to list those things most people like or dislike about our listing:
Our guests love:
o to get some rest in a suburban area in reasonable distance to Downtown Manhattan
o the clean and safe home
o the occasional interaction with their hosts :)
Some of our guests dislike:
o if you have a very light sleep, you might hear other guests sing while taking a shower in the bath room next door
o bathroom, kitchenette with pitched roof and relatively small hallways with steep steps are not perfect for large/tall fellows
o we do not have a microwave
o the location with a relatively long (60 min+) commute to Manhattan and only a few shops in the direct neighborhood
Enjoy your private guest room with west side located windows, that comfortably accommodates 2 guests in total and can be locked. So you can leave your shopping bags at home while you shop more. The guest room is equipped with a dresser, so you can unpack your stuff and put your suitcase under the bed.
The little bathroom is shared with max. 2 fellow travelers who may stay at the other guest room at the same time. Fresh towels and basics such as shampoo, toilet paper, shower gel, etc. will be ready when you arrive. The bathroom has not very high ceilings and the shower is in a vintage claw foot tub. So larger or taller guests could have difficulties.
Also the little cook-nook is shared. So you can share your favorite places and NYC stories with other airbnb guests at our trendy flea market style place! You will only find a toaster and an electric kettle with some complimentary food, which is more to be considered a "first aid kit" than a breakfast. That gives you plenty of opportunities to prepare different typical American and German meals. Once you are here, we can show you how!
We have carefully collected our vintage, flea market-style, interior like our old fridge that makes our home so cozy. Authentic interiors may inspire you to make a trip to a Brooklyn flea market.
Our home is about 60+ min from downtown Manhattan. This is why we and most of our guests love this place. Of course this is also the reason for a reasonable price. So when it comes to your decision about the location, please make sure you know that our low prices reflect a longer commute to Manhattan than pricier guest rooms. If you don't like to stay in a suburban area, you can find plenty of hip places on 9flats for your NYC experience.
Directly in front of our House we have the bus stop of line S74. It brings you home after your ferry ride from Manhattan. If you come from Manhattan hop on the S74 bus in Terminal B ($2.75 fare or free transfer if you have already taken the subway or another bus before). After about 16 minutes (13 bus stops) you can get off the bus directly in front of our house. (The 3rd stop after the BP gas station)
One block down the street you'll find the S74 bus stop towards the ferry.
Then you can take the free 25 minute ride into Manhattan and enjoy the view! On the way you already see the Statue of Liberty and the great skyline of downtown Manhattan. When you arrive, you are just steps from Battery Park, Wall Street and the Charging Bull.
To go to Times Square, Central Park or Empire State Building, just take the subway which is located at the exit of the ferry terminal. Take the 1 Train or the R train uptown.
Hands down, the total commute into Manhattan from our house can take 45 - 60+ minutes.
House > Bus 5 min. + Bus > Ferry 15 min. + Ferry > Manhattan 25 min. (plus waiting time, according to your planning)
Certainly you can also skip the ferry at all and take the Express Bus directly into Manhattan. That brings you directly to Wall Street or Times Square.
What ever you like to take. You will have 24 hours, 7 days a week transportation available! Also on holidays. And the Staten Island Ferry is always FREE.
If you like you can take the bus or our complimentary bicycles (availability is limited) to go to the ferry! When you go for the "bike commuter" style, you will also have the benefit to go on board the Staten Island Ferry on the lower level, which is by far not so crowded like the upper level. Discover New York by bike or just leave the bikes locked at the ferry.
Traveling by car? Making a road trip? In New York for business? We have plenty of street parking available around the house and we are conveniently located to Verrazano bridge. What makes your commute to Brooklyn or Manhattan pretty easy! But if you don't find a parking spot when you arrive, ask us!
We also offer airport pick-up/drop-off service for JFK, Newark and LaGuardia airports. If you would like to book this "luxury package", drop us a line and ask if we are available for your flight!
If you prefer to choose our airport pick up service or a taxi to come to our place, we recommend to fly in to Newark airport because it is closer by car.
If you come to our place by public transportation, JFK or LaGuardia may be your best bet because you can use the MetroCard for all means of transport within NYC and don't have to pay extra for the NJ train from Newark.
Basically check-in is 4pm and check-out is 11am. But we are flexible. If you arrive earlier or depart later, just ask as and we can work something out!
A couple of days before you arrive we will catch up with you with some additional information and to make check-in arrangements.
We have a Deli right across the street. If you need a soda or chips, you can walk there in your PJ's.
If you're planning to do a bigger grocery shopping trip, we recommend to stop by Key Food or Western Beef. They are located on the way from the ferry to our house.
Our home is also in convenient distance to the beach. If you would like to relax and spend a day at the beach of Staten Island, just take the bike or bus and enjoy the sun!
Our house is located at the foot of Grymes Hill. A 15 minute Bus ride from the Staten Island ferry. Just at the border of Stapleton and Grymes Hill, where you can still relax in the back yard. The Hill on which our house sits, was used for beer storage years ago, when there was the brewery who also did the catering to the film shoot "The Godfather".
In the front of our house is a busy street with a diverse neighborhood. The backyard of our house is located in the neighborhood of Grymes Hill, where you can find expensive mansions. Just take a walk along the steep street up the hill and enjoy the great view of the New York bay and Verrazano bridge.
Stapleton, the neighborhood in which the street in front of our house is, is an up and coming neighborhood in Staten Island with a lot of development going on at the waterfront. It also was and still is home of some members of the hip hop group "Wu-Tang Clan". On weekends and in the evening you can still get this vibe. So occasionally you can hear construction noise or the neighbors' music.
Right now the direct neighborhood is not very busy with only a few shops. But there are some good restaurants in the neighborhood and as the development is going on, more and more people are moving here and shops are opening up.
To provide young travelers such as startup founders and students with an affordable, clean, safe, comfortable and contemporary place to stay. Located within a reasonable distance to the city center.
We want to prove that a cozy and attractive place to stay doesn't need to cost a couple of hundreds a night.
Please don't forget: We are not offering a luxury resort but we want to offer you the best available guest experience that you can find for the low price you pay.
Come and stay in one of our two guest rooms in our vintage style house in Staten Island! Your German-Austrian hosts may surprise you with a random selection of our home made pastries :)
You will have access to your booked guest room which can be locked with the key you will receive.
Also you will have access to the kitchenette with fridge and to the shared bathroom. And when the weather is nice, please feel free to come to the backyard and enjoy your dinner or breakfast outside!
Wifi access is also free of course:)
INTERACTION WITH GUESTS
WE LOVE OUR GUESTS! So whenever Sandra and/or I will be present, please feel free to ask us what you always wanted to ask.
If we never bump into each other while you stay, because your sightseeing schedule is so busy, no problem at all, send us a message if you want to know anything.
MORE IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Whenever there is something that makes you feel uncomfortable or whenever you have a suggestion for an improvement, PLEASE TELL US while you are here so we can try to fix it and make your stay as enjoyable as possible.
Nevertheless, here are some FAQ's you might find useful :)
Q: Why is no trash can in the guest room?
A: Because we would not be able to empty it while you are here and so the trash would probably beginn to smell.
Q: Do you have cats?
A: Yes. Normally they are with us on the first floor. But sometimes they also walk upstairs where our guest rooms are.
