La Bou Country Cottage is ideally situated in the hills above Soufriere in the Dominican countryside. It offers unique architecture, amazing mountain views, easy access to all island attractions and most importantly, it has a dedicated support staff who are housed only 500 m away.
As a guests at La Bou you will have access to the entire retreat and the surrounding area and all that it has to offer.
Interaction with Guests
We can interact with our guests as little or as much as they would like. We can let them enjoy total privacy, or spend all day with them showing them the sights and sounds of Dominica. We can be hired as Tour Guides and or Drivers.
The unique thing about our neighborhood is the amazing and abundant nature. All you hear and see is nature. You will fall asleep and wake up to bird song and other natural sounds. Typical sounds here include sounds made by tree frogs, birds and certain insects. We also sometimes hear sounds being made by the local domestic animals in the valley, such as roosters, pigs, goats and cows. Hearing dogs barking is also not uncommon, since there is at least one dog guarding the retreat at all times.
As far as getting around is concerned, renting a small 4x4 Jeep is your best option. If you choose not to rent a car, you can still get around quite well if you are not afraid of walking. Local buses run to all areas of the island and are inexpensive. The nearest bus stop is about a 1km down the hill in Soufriere. Hitchhiking is also still a viable option here. Please make sure to greet all people you meet along the road with a smile and a loud "Good Morning". They will answer you with a loud "OK" or a thumbs up sign. It is considered "rude" to not greet everyone you pass on the road.
Other Things to Note
La Bou is located between sections 1 and 2 of the National Trail and right behind the famous Soufriere Sulphur Springs. Soothing hot baths can be enjoyed there day and night. The springs are about a 10 minute hike down the road. La Bou gets its water from the rain, so there is no hot water in any of the buildings. Electricity is provided by a battery bank charged by solar panels. Please conserve both water and electricity whenever possible when you are here. 12V and 110V is available for your charging needs. There is no internet or TV available at La Bou. Guests can have access to the internet and phone line at our office 1km away.
We are living in the middle of nature here, so do expect to see lots of wildlife, including but not limited to insects, birds, lizards, etc.
Important to note: We keep at least two dogs at the retreat at all times for our security.
