We stayed the first night at the Hotel Nacional and really didn't like it at all. Then moved into Casa Arte and what a wonderful and truly welcoming place it is!!!! I am highly recommending it to everyone and I'd never want to stay anywhere but the Casa Arte when in Havana. It is simply the best.

If you want to see the real Havana this is the place to stay. The apartment is only a block from the Capitol building and is in Centro but only a block away from Old Havana. It is not a tourist street at all, thus it will appeal to real travellers. Watch life on the street out of your windows. Listen to the songs of the mobile food sellers announcing their wares and watch the buyers baskets go down on ropes from the windows above. The streets are where the locals hang out, sing, dance,argue and play. You will see it all. Although it looks gritty and very poor the area is safe. The locals will be interested in you too, we found they entered the building with us and took us up in the lift just to check us out. They were all interested in my children. The location is a good one for walking to the old city or down the Malecon. I looked at the faded splendid of the spacious airy apartment and imagined how it would have been in the past. Basic bathroom and kitchen, but this is Cuba.
