What is a Geopark?
A Geopark is an area recognised as belonging to the European Geoparks Network and the Global Geoparks Network, supported by UNESCO. Villuercas-Ibores-Jara was accepted into these networks on 17 September 2011 during the 9th European Geoparks Conference, following much hard work by all the member entities that very night, which took place under the backdrop of the ringing of the bells of the Monastery of Guadalupe.
A Geopark is an area which conserves geological heritage of recognised value and covers a sufficient, clearly defined area to apply conservation, education and sustainable development strategies within it. Villuercas-Ibores-Jara forms part of two of Spain’s geological environments of international importance, as defined by the Law on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity: The waterway network, plains and Appalachian landscapes of the Iberian Massif and the Iberian Variscan Orogen (mountain range). All the towns and villages of the municipal association of Villuercas-Ibores-Jara are within the park, which covers an area of 2544.4 Km2.
A great, accessible geological heritage. Within geoparks you can visit many geological sites of particular importance in terms of their scientific quality, rarity, aesthetic appeal or educational value. There are also places of ecological, archaeological, historical or cultural interest, which are equally highly valued. In Villuercas-Ibores-Jara there are over forty Geosites of unquestionable value for their paleontological wealth, folds and faults, erosive and sedimentary formations or mining past, or for being Natural Monuments, such as the Cave of Castañar de Ibor. These Geosites are found in incredible landscapes which hide unique ecosystems such as marshes, laurel groves and Mediterranean forest, or rocky outcrops with rock art, traces of the human presence which has been here since the very beginnings of these lands. This presence has also left behind dolmens, hill-forts, castles, traditional festivals steeped in history and beautiful Mudéjar architecture, crowned by the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe.
A region in which Geotourism is promoted. Geoparks develop this ecotourism model exactly as it was established in the “Arouca Declaration”: Geotourism is defined as tourism which sustains and improves the identity of a region, considering its geology, environment, culture, aesthetic values, heritage and the wellbeing of its inhabitants. Geological tourism is a vital tool for the conservation, dissemination and revaluing of the Earth’s past and of Life, including their dynamics and mechanisms. It enables visitors to understand the past 4,600 million years in order to analyse the present from another perspective and imagine the possible future shared scenarios for the Earth and Humanity.
A model of cooperation and social enhancement. One of the aims of geoparks is for the people living within their boundaries to reappropriate their value and take an active part in their development. The regional educational community is responsible for the educational project of Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark, with the methodological support of its Educational and Scientific Committee in preparing teaching materials. Social and business support is equally important and can be seen in social networks and in the management structure in which all the Public Administrations participate, along with the University of Extremadura, the local action group Aprodervi and the business association Geovilluercas.
A region for the development of scientific research. All the Geoparks promote scientific research to find, analyse and preserve the Geological Heritage and Geodiversity of their regions. In Villuercas-Ibores-Jara important contributions have been made in palaeontology, geomorphology, karstic phenomena and many other fields of Earth Sciences. But this is also the case in the fields of education, anthropology, culture and art. These contributions to the knowledge of the region improve the ability to conserve it and also strengthen the position from which geotourism interpretation is constructed.
Working together in an international network of cooperation. The Global Geoparks Network brings together 91 Geoparks across the world, 52 of which are in the European Network, in 2012. They are true cooperation networks with work groups, meetings and scientific conferences held every year, all collaborating to improve each Geopark. One of their most visible acts takes place every year in the last week of May: European Geoparks Week. This is a date to put down in your diary and participate in the activities, which will help you improve your understanding of each geopark’s heritage and get personally involved in the development of the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark.
