Über Glenn

Glenn L. DeVoogd serves as professor at the School of Education and Human Development at California State University, Fresno, and Chair of the Department of Literacy and Early Education where he teaches courses in literacy development. The son of an immigrant mother, Dr. DeVoogd has always sought to explore ways language and cultural impact the literacy teaching and learning. During his 16 years in the public schools, as a bilingual teacher, director of educational services for children of migrant farm workers, and technology staff developer, he sought to understand how the contexts and tools of the teacher interact with cultural norms of students. His inquiry into the cultural impact of technology on literacy led to academic study at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, U.S.A. where he received his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy. Dr. DeVoogd taught early childhood and instructional technology courses for three years at the University of Houston before coming to California State University, Fresno. Dr. DeVoogd has written extensively on critical literacy and on the use of technology as a tool for instruction in teacher education. In 2004 he co-authored a book with Maureen McLaughlin called Critical Literacy: Enhancing Student’s Comprehension of Texts which has been the bestselling book in the field of critical literacy since it came out. That book and other articles written by Dr. DeVoogd suggests that what a person reads is merely one of the many perspectives on that topic and that a reader should identify the author’s bias and imagine the other multiple other perspectives. He serves on editorial boards for Contemporary Issues in Early Childhood Education, Technology and Teacher Education Conference Annual and Pacfic Asian Educational Journal. Glenn DeVoogd enjoys reliving an unsuccessful sports career through his children; children’s books; language and cultural study.
