Saint Athanassios named thus "wide stone", in 1344 (when he went up him for first time). According to the most valid sources, first monks installed in that region in 12th century. In the means of 14th century, monk Nile assembled those who lived isolated in the caves of rocks. Thus the monasticism in Meteora was organized.
